Resetting a users passphrase

If one of your users has lost or forgotten their passphrase, and you're the administrator of a Hushmail account with your website name or a custom domain, you can reset the passphrase for them. This guide will walk you through the process, step by step.

Note: Only an administrator with access to a passphrase component can can reset a users passphrase. Below, we’ll explain how to locate the component and complete the passphrase reset.


Watch: Resetting a users passphrase


To reset a user's passphrase you will need:

  1. To be able to access the passphrase shadows folder in your administrator account.
  2. To be able to find an entry for the account that needs its passphrase reset in the passphrase shadows folder in your administrator account.
  3. To be able to sign into Hushtools with your administrator account.

Accessing a passphrase component

  1. Sign in to your Hushmail administrator account.
  2. Open the folder named Passphrase Shadows.
  3. Find and open the most recent message for the account that needs its passphrase reset.
  4. Copy the text from the message. You’ll need this for the reset.

Resetting the passphrase

  1. Sign into Hushtools with your administrator account.
  2. Go to Users, then click Show all users to view a list of users on your domain.
  3. Click Edit next to the user whose passphrase needs to be reset.
  4. Select Reset Passphrase.
  5. Paste the text you copied into the field labeled Paste one of the passphrase components required for reset.
  6. Enter and confirm the new passphrase in the Enter the new passphrase field.
  7. Click OK.

The passphrase has now been reset, and the user can sign in with their new passphrase.

Note: Customers with legacy plans not listed on our website might not have passphrase recovery enabled. You may contact us to have this feature enabled. This is not a retroactive solution. If the passphrase is already lost and the feature was not enabled, then enabling it after will not allow you to reset the passphrase
