Set Your Encryption Options
As a domain administrator, you can control how emails sent from third-party email applications (such as Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird) are encrypted when sent to recipients who don’t use Hushmail. By setting your encryption preference in Hushtools, you can decide whether these emails are sent with or without encryption.
Note: These settings apply only to emails sent from third-party email applications. Changes here will not impact how email is sent through the Hushmail website.
How to update your encryption settings
- Sign in to Hushtools with your domain administrator account.
- On the Domain screen, click Configure Domain to open your domain options.
- Look under the heading SMTP Encryption (Using Third-Party Email Applications).
- Select your encryption preference from the drop-down menu.
- Click Save in the bottom right of the page.
Encryption options
You can choose one of two encryption settings:
Send without encryption. The recipient can read the email in their own email application. (default)
With this option selected:
- If you send an email from your email application to someone who does not have a Hushmail account and has never received an encrypted email before, the email will be sent unencrypted.
- If you send an email to someone who does have a Hushmail account or to someone outside of Hushmail who has previously received an encrypted email, the email will be sent encrypted.
Send with encryption. The recipient must create a passphrase and read the email on a secure web page.
With this option selected:
- If you send an email to someone who does not have a Hushmail account, the message will be sent encrypted. The recipient will receive a notification with a link to our message pickup page, where they can read the message securely.
- If you send an email to someone with a Hushmail account, it will be sent encrypted and delivered to their Hushmail inbox.
This setting ensures that all emails sent from your email program or app are encrypted all the time.
If you would rather control exactly which messages are encrypted or not, you may be interested in Subject line encryption.
