Send securely with subject line encryption

Note: Subject line encryption only works in email apps like Outlook, Mac Mail or email apps on your phone.

Subject line encryption allows you to control when your emails are sent encrypted simply by including a specific word in the subject line of the message you're sending. This feature is especially useful if you're using an email program like Outlook or Mac Mail and need to send secure messages to patients or contacts outside of Hushmail. By adding the keyword to your subject line, you can ensure your message is protected with encryption, giving you peace of mind when sending sensitive information.

Here’s how subject line encryption works and how to get started.

How to turn on subject line encryption

To start using subject line encryption, follow these steps:

  1. Contact our Customer Care team – Send us a message using our contact page or send an encrypted request from your Hushmail account to support@hushmail.com asking for the feature to be turned on.
  2. Provide your keyword – When requesting the feature, let our team know which keyword you'd like to use to trigger encryption. We suggest the word “secure,” but you can choose any word that makes sense for your practice.
  3. Wait for confirmation – Our Customer Care team will enable the feature on your account and notify you when it's ready to use.

Once the feature is activated, you can begin using subject line encryption immediately.

When is encryption needed?

Without subject line encryption enabled, emails sent through your mail app will only be encrypted if they’re going to other Hushmail users or contacts who have received encrypted email in the past. If you send an email to someone who has never received an encrypted message the email won’t be encrypted by default. Subject line encryption solves this by letting you decide when encryption is needed, even when emailing people outside of Hushmail.

Note: If you send emails through the Hushmail website, the subject line encryption feature will not be applied. Read this article to learn how to send encrypted through our website.

Example

If your keyword is “secure,” a subject line like this in your email app would trigger encryption:

Re: Your appointment details - secure

In this case, the presence of the keyword "secure" ensures that the message will be encrypted when it's sent.

Subject line encryption is a simple and powerful way to ensure your emails are protected when needed. Contact our Customer Care team to get it set up, and start sending secure emails with ease.
