Sending encrypted messages
Hushmail makes it easy to send encrypted messages, keeping your communication secure whether you're messaging someone who uses Hushmail or someone who doesn’t. Here’s how you can send encrypted emails to protect your information.
Sending encrypted messages to a Hushmail user
If you're messaging someone who also uses Hushmail, the process is straightforward:
- Sign in to your Hushmail account through our website or use the Hushmail for iPhone app.
- Click the Compose button and type your message.
- Make sure the Encrypted switch is on (it will automatically be on if you're sending to another Hushmail user).
- Click Send to deliver your encrypted message.
Sending encrypted messages to someone who doesn’t use Hushmail
When sending an encrypted message to someone who doesn’t have a Hushmail account, they'll access your message through a secure web page. Here’s how it works:
Compose your email as usual and ensure the Encrypted switch is on.
- After you send it, your recipient will receive a notification in their inbox with a link to your secure message.
The first time they receive an encrypted message from you, they'll be prompted to open it using their Google, Microsoft, or Apple account, or by creating a password.
You can also add an extra layer of security:
- Optional security question: When sending your first encrypted message to someone who doesn't use Hushmail, you can include a security question. This is highly recommended if you’re sending sensitive information, as it ensures only the intended recipient can read the email.
- If your recipient hasn’t created a password yet, you’ll see the option to add a security question. Once they’ve set a password or linked their account, this won’t be necessary.
