Turn on two-step verification

This guide will walk you through how to turn on two-step verification for your Hushmail account. We’ll also explain how to find and use a special security code that you’ll need to sign in to email apps like Outlook or Mac Mail after you’ve enabled this extra layer of security.

What is two-step verification?

Two-step verification adds an extra step to keep your Hushmail account secure by making sure only you can sign in. First, you’ll sign in using your email address and passphrase. Then, you’ll enter a verification code that we’ll send either by text message to your mobile phone or by email to a backup address. You can also get a code through a smartphone app.

Steps to turn on two-step verification

  1. Sign in to your Hushmail account.
  2. Go to the Preferences page by clicking the menu in the upper right corner:

Using two-step verification with a desktop or mobile email app

When you sign in to an email app, like Outlook or Mac Mail, with two-step verification turned on, you’ll need to enter a security code in the Password field.

How to find and use your security code

  1. Sign in to your Hushmail account.
  2. Go to the Preferences page by clicking the menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Click on the Security tab.
  4. Make sure two-step verification is turned on.
  5. At the bottom of the Security tab, find the section called Using a desktop or mobile email application (as shown below).

Note: You can also use this link to go directly to the Security tab in Preferences

  1. In this section, you’ll see a line that shows your passphrase followed by a 20-character security code: your_passphrase xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx .
  2. When your email app asks for your password, enter your Hushmail passphrase (in place of "your_passphrase") followed by a space and then the 20-character security code, including the spaces, but do not add a space at the end.

Example:

If your passphrase is your_passphrase , you would enter:

your_passphrase xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx

Note: Some email apps may ask you to enter this information for both the incoming and outgoing server settings.

Next steps

When you sign in for the first time after turning on two-step verification, you’ll be asked to enter a verification code. This will be sent via your chosen method (text or email). Once you enter the code, the device will be registered.

You’ll also receive a backup verification code. Keep this code safe. It can be used to access your Hushmail account if you can’t receive verification codes through your phone or alternate email.
